Buyers moving to Florida's Nature Coast often ask me the same question: should I look in Weeki Wachee or Hernando Beach? Both offer waterfront living just minutes apart in Hernando County, but they feel very different.
Hernando Beach is built around canals that lead out to the Gulf of Mexico. It's a boater's community, where many homes have private docks and lifts, and fishing, scalloping and sunset cruises are part of everyday life. Canal depth varies from street to street, which matters a lot if you own a larger boat. I created a canal depth guide so buyers can check before they fall in love with a house.
Weeki Wachee is quieter and greener, centered on the spring-fed Weeki Wachee River. Life there is about kayaking, paddleboarding, manatees and crystal-clear water rather than open-Gulf boating. Lots are often larger and more private, and the river towns have an Old Florida feel.
How to choose: if you want to run a boat into the Gulf, start with Hernando Beach and check canal depth and bridge clearances. If you want nature, privacy and paddling, start with Weeki Wachee. Either way, ask about flood zone, elevation and insurance costs before you make an offer.
