You notice it as a rhythm: the outdoor unit spins up, runs two or three minutes, clicks off — then a few minutes later, does it again. On a hot Northern Virginia afternoon it looks like the AC straining to keep up. It's usually the reverse: the system is failing to complete a proper cooling cycle, and each aborted attempt costs you in comfort, humidity, and equipment life.
What's Normal — and What's Short Cycling
A correctly sized, healthy AC in moderate heat runs 15–20 minute cycles, about 2–3 times per hour. On the hottest days it may run much longer or near-continuously — that's normal.
Short cycling is brief runs of just 1–5 minutes, repeated all day. The pattern, not any single cycle, is the tell.
Why cycle length matters: an AC does two jobs — lowering temperature (fast) and removing humidity (slow, needs sustained runtime). A cycle cut short satisfies the thermostat's temperature reading while leaving the humidity job unfinished. That's why a short-cycling home feels cool but clammy — a real problem in NoVA summers.
Why It's Harmful, Not Just Annoying
Compressor wear — start-up is the hardest moment on the compressor (the most expensive part). Five times the starts = five times the wear.
Humidity — cycles too short to dehumidify leave the house sticky at setpoint, tempting you to lower the thermostat, which just triggers more cycles.
Wasted energy — start-up is the least efficient phase; frequent restarts spend runtime in the hungriest mode.
The Causes — DIY-Checkable First
Check yourself:
Clogged air filter — restricts airflow, can freeze the coil or trip a limit. Try this first.
Frozen evaporator coil — ice trips a safety control; thaw in fan mode, but repeated freezing = deeper issue.
Dirty/crowded outdoor condenser — overheats and trips a high-pressure safety. Clear debris, keep 2 ft clearance.

The Cause Everyone Misses: An Oversized System
If your AC is too big for your home, it short cycles by design. It cools the air to setpoint fast, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off — before running long enough to remove humidity. Then temperature drifts up, it fires again, all day.
This is why "bigger is better" is a myth, and why a system that has short-cycled since installation points to a sizing error, not a broken part. The only real fix is correct sizing via a Manual J load calculation. If you're replacing a chronic short-cycler, insist on a proper load calculation — don't just match the old unit's tonnage.
