An AC that never cycles off feels like a red flag — but on a hot day, long runtimes can be completely normal. The skill is telling normal from a fault.

Few things make a homeowner uneasy like an AC that just… never stops. You notice the continuous hum and start wondering if it's failing, wildly inefficient, or about to run up a shocking bill. Sometimes those worries are warranted. But often — especially during a peak Northern Virginia summer stretch — a long-running AC is doing exactly what it was built to do.

When Constant Running Is Actually Normal

Air conditioners are sized to keep your home comfortable on a hot "design day" — around 95°F in Northern Virginia — not to blast through it in minutes. On the hottest afternoons, a correctly sized system may run almost continuously to hold your setpoint, and that's efficient, expected behavior. The same is true if you've set the thermostat unusually low.

If your AC runs long on peak days but still reaches and holds your set temperature, and cycles more normally in milder weather, it's very likely fine.

    When It's Actually a Problem

It signals a fault when the AC runs and runs but never reaches the set temperature, runs nonstop even in mild weather, or comes with weak airflow, warm air, ice, or a climbing bill.

    DIY Checks to Run First

    1. Air filter — a clogged filter is the #1 airflow restriction. Replace if dirty.

    2. Vents — open and unobstructed, supply and return.

    3. Outdoor unit — clear debris, give it clearance.

    4. Thermostat — reasonable setting, on "auto" not "on" (the "on" fan setting can feel like nonstop running).

    5. Ice — any ice on the unit? Turn it off and call; running frozen risks the compressor.

    The Causes

    • Restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked vents, dirty coil) — most common; filter/vents are DIY

    • Low refrigerant from a leak — loses capacity, runs to chase a setpoint it can't hit; needs a pro

    • Dirty condenser coil — can't release heat; deep cleaning is a pro job

    • Leaky ductwork — cool air escapes into attics/crawlspaces; duct sealing fixes it

    • Undersized or aging system — lacks capacity (the flip side of oversizing, which causes short cycling)

    • Poor insulation/air sealing — constant heat gain forces longer runtimes

Why Diagnose It Even If the House Is Cooling?

An AC running constantly costs you even when it's comfortable: longer runtime = higher bills + more wear on the compressor = shorter life. A system running far more than peak heat explains is quietly costing money and durability.

Note: This is the opposite of short cycling (turning on/off too often). Constant running and short cycling are two different problems with different causes.
