Tallahassee's canopy of moss-draped oaks and rolling red hills makes it one of the greenest capitals in the nation, and its parks and trails are the quickest way to feel that character up close. Whether you are new in town a lifelong resident, or looking for your next hometown, there is a path for you within a few minutes of downtown.

## Why Tallahassee is a nature lovers town

Few state capitals pack this much green space into city limits. Tallahassee sits at the southern tip of the Appalachians and the north edge of the Florida Panhandle, giving it hills, wetlands, and pine flatwoods — the landscape behind landmarks like the 16-mile Tallahassee-St. Marks trail and the oaks of Cascades Park. That geography lets residents trade beach photos for forest hikes and never run out of trail.

## Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway

For a shaded, elevated ride or stroll, head to the Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway, which consistently ranks among the best road-biking routes in the city on AllTrails. The paved corridor threads through a thick oak canopy that keeps you cool even in summer, making it a favorite for commuters and weekend riders alike. It is free, open sunrise to sundown, and easy to reach from the northeast side of town.

## Lafayette Heritage Trail Park

On the east side, Lafayette Heritage Trail Park delivers the most varied experience in the city. Its shared-use and mountain-bike trails curve around Piney Z Lake, where fishing piers and a hand-launch boat ramp are available, and a pedestrian bridge carries the path over the railroad tracks toward the J.R. Alford Greenway ([Visit Tallahassee](https://visittallahassee.com/trails/lafayette-heritage-trail)). Trail runners, mountain bikers, kayakers, and bird watchers all find their own ground here.

## Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail

The longest ride heads south: the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail runs **16 miles** from the capital to the coastal town of St. Marks ([Florida State Parks](https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/tallahassee-st-marks-historic-railroad-state-trail)). This first paved rail-trail in Florida's greenways system was once a cotton corridor, and today it serves runners, cyclists, and inline skaters, with horse access along the adjacent unpaved path. It is free, open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, and passes through the Apalachicola National Forest.

## Planning your visit

Every trail here is free and pet-friendly with leashes. Bring water, bug spray, and sturdy shoes, and check the weather, since North Florida rain moves fast. If you are house hunting, these greenways are a strong reason to land close to a city you now know has plenty of places to move.
