Why Plus migrations go over budget

A standard migration moves products, customers, orders and URLs onto Shopify. That work is well understood and reasonably priced.

A Plus migration does all of that and then builds the thing you upgraded for. Those are different workstreams with different skills, and the second is routinely absent from the quote.

Four capabilities account for most of it.

Checkout customization. Checkout UI Extensions are Plus-only. If checkout is why you upgraded, that is app development rather than configuration, and it is scoped separately.

Discount and shipping logic. Shopify Scripts stopped executing entirely on 30 June 2026. Any logic that lived in the Script Editor has to be rebuilt on Shopify Functions, delivered inside an app. Brands migrating from a platform where that logic was custom often discover this mid-project.

Expansion storefronts. Plus includes your primary store plus nine. Migrating four regional sites at once is four migrations sharing a catalogue, not one migration with extra settings.

B2B catalogs. Plus allows unlimited pricing catalogs assignable per company. If per-account negotiated pricing is the reason you moved, that configuration and its ERP connection is its own track.

The test. Ask any agency to quote the platform move and the capability build as separate line items. If they cannot separate them, they have not scoped the second one.

What to verify before hiring

Tier, on Shopify's own Partner Directory. Five performance-based tiers: Registered, Select, Plus, Premier, Platinum. A "Shopify Plus Partner" badge sits in the middle with two above it. Check the directory, not the badge on the agency's site.

Migrations from your specific source platform. A number, plus the failure mode of that platform named unprompted. Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Wix each break differently.

Whether they have rebuilt Script Editor logic on Functions. Post-30 June 2026 this is a live requirement, not a theoretical one.

The largest redirect map they have built. Anyone who has run a real migration knows the number immediately, and it is the best proxy for whether SEO preservation is scope or upsell.

Published pricing. Most agencies will not give a figure before two calls. The ones that will have enough project volume to know their own bands.

When another agency is the better answer

You do not actually need Plus. This is the most common one. Plus is justified by a named capability — checkout customization, more than one storefront, per-account B2B pricing, more than ten inventory locations — not by revenue. ERP integration is the hardest part of your project. Agencies specialising in enterprise systems work may fit better than a Shopify-first team.

You need multi-region delivery across several time zones. Larger global agencies exist and that scale is real.

Your budget is under $20,000. A freelancer or smaller agency is the honest recommendation.
