With Madison's inventory so tight, many buyers widen their search to the suburbs. Middleton, Sun Prairie, Fitchburg and Verona are four of the most popular, and each offers something different. Here is how they compare.

## Middleton

Directly west of Madison, Middleton is known for its walkable downtown, Pheasant Branch Conservancy and the Middleton-Cross Plains School District. It has a mix of established neighborhoods and newer subdivisions, and quick access to the Beltline and University Research Park. Prices tend to be on the higher end for the area.

## Sun Prairie

Northeast of Madison, Sun Prairie is one of the fastest-growing cities in Dane County, with lots of newer construction, the Sun Prairie Area School District and easy access to Interstate 94 and Highway 151. It often offers more square footage for the money and suits buyers who commute to the east side or toward Milwaukee.

## Fitchburg

Just south of Madison, Fitchburg mixes established neighborhoods with newer developments and green space, with access to the Verona and Madison school districts depending on the address. Its location near the Beltline, Highway 14 and Fish Hatchery Road makes it convenient for commuting downtown.

## Verona

Southwest of Madison, Verona is home to Epic Systems' campus and the Verona Area School District. It has newer subdivisions, parks and trails, and a small-city feel. Demand from Epic employees keeps the market competitive.
