If you haven't walked around the downtown square in Ocala lately, you're behind. I've been filming a video series down there for the last few months and honestly, it's turned into one of my favorite things to do all week, not because I'm trying to sell anything, just because there's genuinely something happening.
New coffee shops. A steady stream of small restaurants opening in spots that sat empty for years. Storefronts getting real facelifts instead of just a fresh coat of paint. People actually walking the square in the evening, not just driving through it on the way somewhere else. It's the kind of energy you used to have to drive to Winter Park or St. Pete to find, and now it's fifteen minutes from most of Marion County.
Part of it is The Forge, part of it is the string of new restaurants and bars that have opened up around the courthouse, and part of it is just Ocala growing up. This town has been known for horses and retirees for a long time, and that's not going anywhere, but downtown is starting to feel like its own thing. Younger families, remote workers, people who want to walk to dinner instead of getting in the car every time. It's wonderful for some, and it's still finding its footing for others, but the direction is clear.
I get asked a lot why I keep going back down there with a camera instead of just posting mortgage tips. Honestly, people care more about their town than they care about interest rates, and I don't blame them. Watching a place come back to life is a better story than anything I could say about a rate lock.
If you're the kind of person who's been eyeing a place near downtown, whether that's a bungalow a few blocks off the square or something newer close to it, now's a good time to start paying attention. Inventory near downtown moves fast when it's good, and a local agent who actually knows the area block by block is worth more than any listing site. And if financing is part of that conversation whenever you're ready, we're here for that too.
What's your favorite new spot downtown? I want to know what I'm missing.
