The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warns that residential proxy networks recruit ordinary home devices to hide criminal activity, and that compromised routers give attackers a foothold to steal the sensitive data flowing through your house (IC3). The Invisible Door: Securing Your Home Network
Your Wi-Fi router is the front door of your digital life — the device every laptop, phone, camera, and smart lock in your house passes through on its way to the internet. Leave its default password in place or its firmware out of date, and you hand an intruder the key to that door.
The stakes are concrete. The FBI IC3 and U.S. and international intelligence partners published a joint public service announcement warning that Russian GRU cyber actors have been exploiting vulnerable routers worldwide to intercept and steal sensitive information from home networks (IC3). Attackers who take over a router can redirect your DNS and browsing, intercept logins, and watch the traffic generated by every device in your home.
The fixes are straightforward and free. Change the default administrator password on your router the day you set it up, and use a passphrase unique to that device rather than a recycled one. CISA's home router guidance recommends enabling the router's built-in firewall, disabling remote management, and using the strongest wireless encryption the device supports — for modern routers that is WPA2-AES or WPA3 (CISA). Keep the router's firmware updated too, since manufacturers ship patches for the very vulnerabilities attackers exploit (the GRU compromised TP-Link routers, for example, via a known CVE). Set the update to run automatically if your model allows it, and check every few months if it does not.
A compromised router is also one way a home device becomes a residential proxy. According to the FBI, cybercriminals build residential proxy networks from compromised home devices, disguising their malicious traffic as ordinary household internet activity and recruiting your setup into the scheme without your knowledge (IC3). If your devices are slow, erratic, or doing things you never started, a hijacked network could be the cause.
