The beach at the Apollo Beach Nature Preserve is posted no swimming because of a strong, dangerous undertow. It's still one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon: soft white sand, shelling, walking trails, two observation towers, views of the Skyway Bridge, and plenty of manatees. When you want to get in the water, there are two local beaches within about 5 miles where you can swim, Little Harbor and E.G. Simmons Park, both in Ruskin. Or get out on a boat. Beer Can Island is privately owned, the owners welcome visitors, and there's even a bar on the island.
