Did you receive a Cancelation Letter from your Medicare Advantage Plan?
By Marc Gilman, Gilman Agency | Bedford, NH
Short answer: Only three health carriers are offering Medicare Advantage plans in New Hampshire for 2027: Humana, UnitedHealthcare and the newcomer Devoted Health - serving three counties in the state. If your plan is ending and you take no action, you will be moved to Original Medicare on January 1 with no supplement.
What Is Reported To Be Changing
Aetna (CVS Health), Humana (Coos County), and WellSense plans end on December 31, 2026, affecting more than 14,200 members.
Coos County
Coos County will have no Medicare Advantage plans available for general enrollment in 2027. In 2026 it had two. For residents there, the usual route is Original Medicare with a Medicare supplement (Medigap) and a standalone Part D drug plan.
What Happens If I Do Nothing?
Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7.* If your plan is leaving and you don't choose new coverage, your plan ends December 31. On January 1 you are on Original Medicare with no supplement, and if your plan included drug coverage, you no longer have it.
People whose plan leaves get a Special Enrollment Period, but don't count on waiting. Check your dates in your plan's notice or with Medicare.
Your Options
Another Medicare Advantage plan, if one is offered in your county. Check that your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions and pharmacy are covered. Don't assume a plan that is staying has your doctors.
Original Medicare, with a Medigap plan and a Part D plan. Medigap guaranteed issue rights typically last 63 days after your coverage ends, and during that time insurers can't deny you or charge more for health conditions on the plans they must offer. Outside that window you may face medical underwriting. A policy applied for in January may not start until February 1.
Part D: going more than 63 days without creditable drug coverage can mean a permanent late enrollment penalty.
Steps To Take Now
Read your Annual Notice of Change or non-renewal letter.
Look up your county and available plans on Medicare.gov Plan Finder.
Know your doctors, hospitals, medications and pharmacy.
Be ready to compare total yearly costs: premiums, deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums.
For expert advice, consult with an experienced, NH-based Medicare Agent.
Decide before December 7.*
